Liturgical Life of the Academy

Liturgical Life of the Academy

The UEA of Vella of Ioannina is housed and operates at the complex of the historical Monastery of Vella, of which the central Church -Catholikon- is dated back to the 11th century.

This fair coincidence is considered an exceptional blessing for those who have connected their life with this sacred place in the past or are related to it today. And this is because the students of the Academy achieve, in the best possible way, the liturgical education, the practical training, the cultivation of liturgical ethos, and the experiential approach to the sacramental life of the Church.Furthermore, the daily use of the Catholikon contributes, with special comfort and easiness, to the practical exercises on the liturgical and musical subjects of both Academy Programs of Studies. Within the scope of the students’ liturgical and ritual training all the night-day services, the divine Liturgies of the Byzantine Liturgical Type, and occasionally the ancient divine Liturgies are performed in an exemplary way.

Even more, inside the Catholikon, and within the scope of Homiletics subject, the students deliver their homilies and sermons, in the presence of their schoolfellows and the teachers of the Academy.

We believe that this live experience of the Liturgical life, which the Academy daily offers to those students who will serve the Sanctuary or the Psalteries and to those who are already in the service of them, is the most essential link of unity for the graduates not only with the place itself but with one another, too.
